If you own a home in a high-risk flood zone, flood insurance was probably a requisite to receiving a federally backed mortgage loan, but homeowners in low-to-moderate risk areas should consider flood insurance also. On average, NFIP estimates 25-30 percent of their claims come from outside high-risk flood areas. Countrywide, more than 18,000 communities are eligible for flood coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program; your insurance agent can tell you what is available in your community. You can secure flood coverage at any time by contacting your Allstate agent, but be aware that there is a 30-day waiting period for the coverage to take effect.
