Aol Black Voices Caters to African Americans; New Aol Online Division Targets 21 Million According to Vp

Summary

America Online Inc. hopes that their newly designed division AOL Black Voices will have new and frequent visitors log on to their site which specifically caters to issues affecting African Americans. Vice President and General Manager for AOL Black Voices Janet Rolle and Editor-in-Chief of AOL Black Voices Nick Charles came down from New York to discuss this new venture. Rolle said that BV wants to bring a global black perspective using the power of online media. According to Rolle, African Americans spend an average of five hours a day online which is two hours more than the general population. There are 21 million African Americans online and by 2010 a projected 5.6 million will be added.

BV competition is pretty much nil. Blackplanet.com targets a younger audience ranging from 12 to 24 years old. BET.com is what Rolle calls 'the tail of the dog' dealing only with television. BV is more content driven and caters to a more mature demographic of 25 to 49 year olds. The best part is that you don't have to be an AOL subscriber to use it. Simply log on to www.blackvoices.com or type in 'Black Voices' through the AOL keyword. Rolle feels confident that this new transformation will invite more traffic and make it a daily routine.
