What did the historic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision the authors talked about hinge upon? Norma McCorvey, alias "Jane Roe," who they describe as "a poor, uneducated, unskilled, alcoholic, drug-using twenty-one-year-old woman who had already given up two children for adoption." Let [William J. Bennett] tell it, this sounds like a Black woman. Well, wonder of wonders, she's White, and is a fellow Texan of George W. Bush.
the reaction of the White House? Bush called Bennett's commentary "inappropriate." That's it. Not innately wrong, lacking in humanity or moral fiber. Just plain old "inappropriate." In other words, although true, it's better left unsaid in public.Surprisingly, a few Blacks agree. They contend that Black women make up 13% of the American female population, but account for 32% of the nearly 1.3 million abortions performed in the United States in 2002. If you do the math, "that's 413,760 abortions performed on Black women in one year-or 1,133 a day," says Courtland Milloy of the Houston Chronicle. The sentiment is, Black women abort more Black babies a day than the government, Klan, or any other White supremacist group would ever dream of aborting. Since Bennett's comments, "suddenly," complains Milloy, "those fetuses become precious pre-born Black people who must be saved from the evil Dr. Bill."See the full content of this document
