Cathy L. Hughes

Summary

She is who she is, did what she did, knows who she is and what she wants-and usually gets it-she is Cathy L. Hughes, the founder and the force behind Radio One and TV One. And even though TV One is a relative newcomer to the world of television, the name "One" signifies the first, the pioneer and the trailblazer who leads the way so that others may follow. Hughes' "stick-to-it-tive-ness," determination and drive is apparent. She was reportedly denied by 32 banks when seeking a loan to purchase her first radio station, WOL-AM, in 1980. Now she owns over 60 radio stations and has moved into cable television as TV One, a channel, aimed primarily at African Americans.

Hughes is the chairwoman of Radio One and her son, Alfred Liggins is the president and CEO. She is the first African American woman to head a company on the New York stock exchange. Her Initial Public Offering (IPO), in May 1999, represented the largest Black-owned broadcast corporation, and the 16th largest media company in the United States. Hughes' WOL-AM, is the most listened to talk radio in the nation's capital. It pioneered the innovative format- "24 hour Talk from a Black Perspective."

With TV One, as a relatively new cable channel, Hughes has defined its mission as offering African Americans a broad range of entertainment-oriented programming that respects their values and reflects their intellectual and cultural diversity. The channel provides quality programs such as "Room 227," "Good Times" and a selective menu of original programming. Besides being on the board, Hughes also produces "The Gospel Music" and hosts "TV One on One." And if her track record in Radio One may be used as her standard of success, TV One will have a great future ahead. In its special business supplement for 2006, Black Enterprise listed Radio One Inc. as #10 in its 100 service industrial/companies.
