Summary

L.A. Care Health Plan celebrated National Cancer Prevention Month with an event intended to raise awareness of the many health issues feeing women. On Saturday, February 20, women participated in A Morning of "Me" Time where they were able to receive free health screenings, as well as listened to an inspirational talk by radio personality/author Mother Love on how to' stay healthy. The celebration was held at L.A. Care's Family Resource Center from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 3111 W. Century Boulevard in Inglewood.

"Many of us take care of our family members-our children, our husbands, sometimes other relatives-and neglect our own care," said Dr. Elaine Batchlor, Chief Medical Officer at L.A. Care. "But in order to take care of our families, we must also care for ourselves by becoming more physically active, eating healthy, not smoking and getting screened regularly. Taking these steps may prevent or delay many diseases that strike women such as cancer, which is the second leading cause of death for women in the United States."

According to the American Cancer Society, African-Americans have the highest death rate and lowest survival rate for most cancers than any other ethnic group in the United States.
