Martin Luther King, Jr., was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. His religious upbringing in the King home shaped his destiny and thereby shaped the destiny of Black Americans, now and for evermore.
On Jan. 17, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s contributions to society are recognized. At age 35 he was named "Man of the Year," by Time Magazine on Jan. 3rd, 1964. Later the same year, on Dec. 10th, he was the youngest ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.King enrolled at Morehouse College in September, 1944, one of the 206 freshmen that year. Morehouse was the school attended by both Adam D. Williams, his maternal grandfather, and Martin Sr., his father. Both men entered the Baptist ministry and played important roles in civic and religious spheres. In spite of his deep roots in the Black Baptist church and ministry, King decided against the ministry as early as during his high school days.
