On hand to celebrate Mrs. Cotton's 80th birthdav bash were over 85 relatives and friends including some guests from as far away as Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey, Ohio and Texas. Beverly Williams and Dr. Janice Filer were two of the featured speakers on Saturday who shared their stories about how Mrs. Cotton impacted their lives as young girls.

Give it time. Tell your students a story with every lesson and make them part of the story. That is exactly wliar I did." Janice, said, "Cotton was a great mentor who stressed the value of education - it was a life lesson whenever she spoke; because of her I learned the value of community service and I became a teacher, assistant principal and now a principal. It's true that a teacher touches eternity because my daughter is now a teacher."

After retiring from teaching, Cotton pursued a second career; she worked for fifteen years as a travel agent and co-business owner of Orbit Travel & Tours Travel Agency in Inglewood. California. "We had so much fun at the travel agency," said Catherine Stafford, former agent, "it seemed like Cotton and her sister. Dr. Hill took a cruise or plane trip to some exotic location every six months." While working in the travel agency Cotton said she visired Europe, China, Japan, Australia, Israel, Canada, Hawaii, The Caribbean Islands, South America. The Panama Canal and several cities and states in the US.

Cotton taught school for more than 36 years in the Compton Unified School District - registering most of her years as a reading resource teacher at John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Elementary Schools before moving to and finishing her teaching career at Mark Twain.
