For last year's honoree, Ella Fitzgerald, the Postal Service printed 150 million stamps-equivalent to $58.5 million worth of postage. Since Booker T. Washington became the first African American commemorated on a U.S. postage stamp in 1940, the Postal Service has issued more than 100 stamps featuring African Americans and historical milestones in African American culture. The Postal Service has a continued commitment to honoring African Americans on stamps.
