"You work hard, so why not keep up to $4,400 more of your own money?" With the free tax prep and other services the partnership aims to teach low to moderate-income families to build assets, said L.A. Country Children's Council EITC coordinator, Marco Martinez. "At our free tax sites we do more than taxes. We give those without bank accounts the option to open one and we offer other financial management services," Martinez explained.

"Millions of Californians have placed their trust in H&R Block, and unfortunately H&R Block has repaid them by violating that trust," said [Bill Lockyer]. "In marketing and selling these expensive loans, H&R Block has profited greatly, but deceived consumers, violated their privacy rights and taken money from California families who can least afford it. This lawsuit seeks to hold the company accountable for unlawful business practices, prevent future violations and compensate victims."
