[Opal Mitchell Coates Carter], who often refers to herself, as "the precious jewel" is a native of Charleston, WV. She graduated from West Virginia State college (now university) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. Upon graduation from the college, Opal became very actively involved in the West Virginia State College Alumni Association. It was her honor to be its corresponding secretary throughout her stay in West Virginia. Her teaching career began at the Ferguson School in Dunbar, WV, a position she held until 1955, when she moved to Los Angeles, California with her late husband, Marcus Carter, a native of Pittsburgh, PA and a 1953 WVSC graduate.
Mrs. Carter's leadership experience includes serving as president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the WVSC Alumni Association, director of ACSA Region XIV Basileus, Second anti-Baseleus, Far Western Regional director and executive Advisor of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. She has served as vice president and is currently serving as parliamentarian, Theta Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a position she has held for the terms of the last four presidents, and makes her way to Founder's Church of Religious Science, to receive the sustenance of life needed to continue her volunteer work.See the full content of this document
