We all have had those feelings mainly because we don't know what to expect in these meetings, and we don't feel in control. Often our hostility for the teacher surfaces because we would rather not deal. Maybe you had to take off work, and your boss is not happy. You have more pressing family problems dealing with your finances, and another child or two to parent. Perhaps you feel guilty because you don't know how to help your child with homework, or maybe you don't have the time or patience. Besides, math is so different now than when you were a child. Some of us are even intimidated by the teacher because we know she is more educated than us. Or maybe you feel the teacher is blaming you for your child being out-of-control.

If it's impossible for you to go to school, call the teacher or see if you communicate through email or by phone. Don't think open houses are enough, especially if your child is struggling. It's not the best way to talk about your child's issues.. Teachers simply do not have the time to give their full attention to you when there are other parents waiting to talk about their child too.

Many Americans are faced with tough challenges today. Don't be ashamed to tell your child's teacher about home issues that may affect his work in school. Update the teacher or counselor of major changes that occur in your family such as death, divorce, or illnesses.

Perhaps you feel guilty because you don't know how to help your child with homework, or maybe you don't have the time or patience. [...] math is so different now than when you were a child. Remember children drop out of school mentally long before they physically leave. see these meetings as an opportunity to learn more about your child and how to support her to head off any problems before they get more serious.
