Summary
Respect is/has global universal intentions. It is aimed at everybody. Now it seems that respect is either gained or lost. When we refer to it, it is in the context of, "you have got to gain respect" or "she lost my respect". So because it can be gained and lost we can look at respect as merit, reward, achievement or benefit. Much respect has been gained in our community of women, through our ancestors. Women such as Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, and Mary McLeod Bethune pushed us into reclaiming our respect. Even though we were going through the degradation of slavery, being raped by the oppressor, being treated as livestock, and getting laid instead o( paid-We still had to demand respect from our families, and community.
Through out the history of the women's movement, there is one consistent message- EQUALITY. Treat me the same as everybody else. Well today, we redefine the movement. Don't treat me the same as everybody else. 1 am not your homeboy, 1 am not your kickin4 it partner, and I am not a dude. I am woman. Defined and refined. Victorious and Virtuous. Give me respect and I can work my way towards Equality. Equality produces political power and economic change. Respect produces Love and Good Life. Have you ever seen a.-*.;. sister who has a good job, beautiful home but no self worth, and low self esteem? Proverbs says a virtuous woman buildeth her house. We have been so busy building up Massa's house that, our own hotnes have gotten placed on the back burner. So what, we think we are off the plantation? On the videos grinding, we are still up under Massa. Walking down the street with our heads hung low, still we are up under Massa. Dealing with all these "Who is my baby's daddy issues", we are still up under Massa. Ladies, it is obvious that all of us have not been delivered to the north.
