Santa Never Looked so Good

Summary

It's been nearly 20 years since a young, obviously talented [Morris Chestnut] appeared in his first feature film, "Boyz 'n the Hood," the critically acclaimed and box office success for first time filmmaker, John Singleton. Singleton became the youngest director to be nominated for an Academy Award for "Boyz," and, as a matter of fact, he was nominated in two categories that year (1992): Best Directing and Best Original Screenplay.

Earlier this year, I spoke to the proud father of two children about his star turn in award-winning playwright David E. Talbert's acclaimed stage play, "Love in the Nick of iytne" on the subject of his long-standing impact on audiences (especially aipong the ladies). I referred to him as today's Sidney Poitier. Humbly and in his self-deprecating manner Chestnut replied, "Wow...Sidney Poitier, I don't know how I could respond to that ... no, I never know how people will respond.

"David (Talbert) and I talked about it beforehand and I let him know that I'm not the type who feeds off of public adulation. -It took a lot for me to get up on stage every night because in all honesty, I'm a very shy person. I stay at home mostly because I don't always want to deal with the public's reaction. I am honored and humbled by it."

Chestnut, dressed in a black leather jacket, button up shirt and jeans, entered a hotel suite at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills with well wishes and salutations, flashing his million-dollar smile saying, "Merry Christmas," before taking a seat to discuss his current role as Benjamin, a struggling songwriter who works part-time as Santa Claus in the local mall.
