The new action plan will improve "safe school groups" by connecting parents to the mayor's office, the police department, school police as well as LAUSD. With federal grant funding the district will receive 30 new school police officers to be distributed at the most "active schools," according to LASPD Chief Alan Kerstein.

"Reconsider the hearts you're ripping out every time you do these senseless tragedies," she said. "No family deserves to stand here and feel like we feel, not one mother, sister uncle or aunt." Candacy's 22-year-old son had committed suicide one week before [Allen-Roberts] was shot and the family was preparing to bury him.

Other parts of the safe-neighborhoods program will address the expansion of gang injunctions, stricter anti-truancy laws and the closure of streets around schools at drop off and pick up times. Some actions like additional officers will be instituted quickly, said the group. Others will be developed over time. "Enough is enough," said [Roy Romer]. "We need to declare our schools 'gang-free zones' and mean it."
