Urban Perspective; Local Groups Host First National Reparations Congress

Summary

The First National Reparations Congress (NRC) was held last May on the campus of Compton College. Sponsors included the NRC National Planning Group, Reparations United Front (RUF) (a local reparations coalition) and the Black Students Union of Compton College.

The NRC was not a conference that wanted noted speakers to inspire more reparations activity, and it was not a gathering of the designated "leaders" of the national reparations effort to merely talk about how things are going. Instead, the NRC was part of on-going strategy involving black folk from across the country who are actually doing the everyday work of pushing the reparations movement forward.

In the near future, the NRC planning committee and NRC participants will issue a Declaration of African Consensus Agreements in Support of the Reparations Movement, as well as a written summary of proceedings and proposals for further action. NRC participants unanimously agreed to practice "unity without uniformity" in the reparations movement by supporting and advocating all positive reparations efforts from progressive reparations groups. There was also general recognition that there could be no unity and no real focus in the Movement until everyone actively practiced the unity they so loudly embrace.
