Volunteers Take an Active Role in the Lives of Hillcrest Students

Summary


"Research says that the more adult intervention students have, the more chances of success they have," said Hillcrest Principal Edward Brownlee. "We want more adults in our students' lives to monitor their progress and help them succeed."

"I caught her eye," said a 12th grader named Marquita, describing how she chose her mentor-Willa Snorton, IUSD Director of Special Projects. "I felt her positive image, so I chose her." An obvious go-getter, Marquita in fact found herself two mentors that day, the second being Bank of America Vice President Javon English. "Meeting these mentors was a blessing," Marquita said. "I had been looking for a mentor, and today I found two."

Hillcrest Continuation High School's mentor program helps to achieve the school district's mission that all students "excel as productive world citizens" through "effective partnerships with families and all segments of the community."
