Why Black History Month Should Be Every Month

Summary


Growing up a sharecropper's son on a plantation in rural Mississippi prior to the civil rights movement, my experience as a young boy was filled with denial and humiliation. This was at a time, particularly in the Deep South when a young Black youth was taught to accept that life would be nothing more than manual labor and little opportunity.

I can remember in 6th grade, the plantation owner called out several boys my | size and declared, "You boys don't need education to pick cotton, get out there and help your folks get my cotton."

A dream ignited, and at age 15, I moved to Chicago. With no money, and nowhere to live, I learned quickly that the only way to survive was by doing that of which my father told me years before. I decided to step out on "faith" learned a skill, and was "focused" on being my own boss. Because I followed through on my goals, by the age of 27, I was a millionaire, and was now living the American Dream.
